Originally from Birmingham, England and having learned his trade at Sutton Coldfield RFC, Simon arrived in Canada with just 3 bags and 3 hundred dollars to his name and joined the BLRC in 1997. He was overwhelmed by the warm welcome he received upon arrival and has since served the BLRC as a player, coach, and is enjoying his second stint as Club President.

Simon is committed to working hard with all members of our fantastic club, our generous sponsors, and our partners at the City of Burnaby and Sports Tourism Burnaby. The goal being to ensure we do all we can to make Burnaby Lake Rugby Club the best rugby club in North America, a great representative of the City of Burnaby, and a home for all.

We are striving to make Burnaby Lake a model of sustainability as a non profit sports organization and an environment where athletes and members of all ages, genders, and ethnicities can develop, thrive and fulfil their potential. This applies to the sports field, personal life and career. Simon is proud that BLRC was built by volunteers for volunteers and is a huge promoter of rugby in the community.

Originally from Saint John New Brunswick, Mike Devlin joined the BLRC in 2007 and considers the members of the club his West Coast Family. As a player he captained the 1st Div Men to a provincial Championship in 2011, his final season wearing cleats on Saturday. Mike joined the executive committee at the end of his first season with the BLRC and was the Vice President for a year before assuming the Presidency for 4 years. Upon stepping down as President he was followed by Simon Smoldon and Mike continues to help out the club in an advisory role as the Past President.

John did not start playing rugby until he was 24 years old, when he joined the Trojan RFC.
He was instantly hooked on the sport. In addition to playing, he has a long history of being the treasurer, holding positions with Trojans, Vancouver Rugby Union, British Columbia Rugby Union, Evergreens RFC, and the Brockton Clubhouse. When the BLRC asked John to take on the treasurer role, he was delighted to have an opportunity to become involved.

Maureen McLean (a.k.a. Mrs. House) is a newcomer to the Executive, but by no means a newbie to BLRC. She has been around since before the merger in 1994 and has been an active volunteer in a variety of areas. Co-ordinator of the annual golf-tournament , very active in the game-day food program, on the Dave Milne Scholarship Committee and steps up whenever asked. She was BLRC’s recent winner of the Rob Forsberg ‘Club Person of the Year Award’.

Andrew began his career with the Burnaby Buffaloes as a member of the club’s Summer games team in 1987.
He played senior men’s rugby with the Buffaloes, and then the BLRC, from 1987-2002, appearing in 3 BC finals.
Andrew is proud to have been the first Premier captain of the BLRC and even prouder to introduce many young players to the game of rugby.

Trevor joined the senior men’s program at Burnaby Lake back in 2013, having never played the game before. He struggled to learn the laws, develop the skills … catch a ball at first. But has stayed committed to improving game by game, and year by year. Now a vocal proponent of amateur rugby Trevor finds himself captaining the clubs 2nd division team, sitting on the executive committee, still struggling to catch a ball, and leading the charge in all things social.

Mike Gough has been a member of BLRC since 2010. Originally from Derry, Ireland, he learnt his trade at City of Derry Rugby Club and then on to Queen’s University, Belfast and Cooke Rugby Club.
He first came to BLRC in 2005 for a 1 year working holiday and fell in love with everything the club and country had to offer. He relocated in 2010 and captained the premier side for 3 successful years before handing over to Anthony Luca. Although still an active player, he has served on the Executive Committee for more than 5 years.

Alya is an active senior women’s team member and has been with Burnaby Lake Rugby Club since 2011. Shelby Sloan is an active coach and Junior Director of Youth Rugby at the Burnaby Lake Rugby
Club. Originally from Kamloops, British Columbia, Shelby took a break from rugby after high
school while pursuing the arts, only to be led back to the game in 2012. Shelby played for the
UBC Thunderbirds under Burnaby Alumnus, Maria Gallo and joined the Blue and White Nation in
2013 where she played for both the Women’s Development and Premier side. Shelby returned
from Auckland, New Zealand in 2017 where she represented the Premier Women’s team at the
College Rifles Rugby Football Club.

Shelby is passionate about grassroots rugby and youth
engagement. She is continually working to introduce youth athletes, and specifically female
athletes into the sport by coaching the junior girl’s program at Burnaby Lake, as well as the girl’s
rugby programs at Burnaby North Secondary School and Burnaby Mountain Secondary School.
Recently, Shelby has started to connect with schools in the Burnaby School district to introduce
Rugby into weekly gym classes and let student and teachers experience this inclusive and
dynamic sport. In addition to this, Shelby also coaches in the Mini Rugby Program during the
spring season and loves creating new and fun games for our Little Lakers to enjoy.
